Rector Search

SEARCH COMMITTEE REPORT (8/8/08)

John Holmes, a member of the Search Committee, has submitted the following update on the committee's progress:

When the search process started, we promised to give you monthly updates. We are currently in the recruitment and candidate development phase, which means, simply, we are collecting names of those who have expressed an interest in our opening, as well as names that you have suggested to us. Candidates receive a letter from us, along with our profile and a questionnaire to return with their resume and CDO (Church Deployment Office) profile.

We have been advertising our opening through various national print and online publications of the Episcopal Church and through the contacts of our Diocesan deployment officer. Since we are in the summer vacation months, we have been advised that we need to advertise our opening for about 8 weeks, and we are halfway through that now.  This process will continue for another month.

We have begun to see positive results from our advertising in the past week or so. Our webmaster, Jim Kyle, has told us that traffic to our website has increased dramatically during this period with over 150 visits which can be directly attributed to interested candidates for our position. By the first week in September we hope to have all our interested candidates in the pool. On September 8th we will have our next meeting with Cannon Matt Stockard and we can begin the process of selecting those candidates that we will interview.

Our hope is that we could begin the visitation process during November and December and be ready to issue a call to our new priest shortly after the first of the year. However, it is important that we all keep in mind that we are not going to be tied to any self-imposed or artificial deadlines.  There is no deadline for this process.  We have gotten excellent counsel and advice from Stephen Caldwell, from the Bishop and from his deployment officers that the greatest danger inherent in the search process is impatience. So, we continue to solicit your prayers for our committee, and for our congregation that we all may be blessed with patience as we discern the rector that God has selected to lead St. John’s.

SEARCH COMMITTEE REPORT (6/16/08)

Richard Alligood, chairman of the Rector Search Committee, reported on the committee’s progress at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services on Sunday, June 8.  Alligood said the

committee has met with Interim Rector Stephen Caldwell and the Rev. Canon Phil Craig, the diocesan deployment officer.

Canon Craig provided the committee with a nine-page position description form, which the committee and the Vestry have completed and returned to the diocese.  Canon Craig will use the form to list St. John’s clergy position in the national church’s Open Position Bulletin.

Alligood said that through the bulletin and two major conferences by the national church, the Search Committee will receive names of clergy candidates.  In addition, members of the St. John’s congregation are invited to submit names of potential candidates.  Alligood said the names of candidates, along with their current church and any other data available, should be emailed to him at CRA@embarqmail.com.  The committee will keep individuals informed about the outcome of candidates they nominate.

Alligood thanked the congregation for its support and encouragement and asked that the committee be remembered in parishioners’ prayers.

SEARCH COMMITTEE NAMED

Senior Warden Jean Moore has announced the names of the 12 parishioners who will serve

on the Search Committee to find a new rector for St. John's.  In making the announcement, she said, "The Vestry is happy to announce that the Search Committee is now complete.  These people were chosen based on the results of the Parish Profile (linked below).  The 65 names submitted for consideration were studied and divided into the demographic categories identified by the profile.  Criteria for selection included:  no current Vestry members, no current Vestry spouses, and that Search Committee members must be active, pledging members of St. John’s.

"After the first ballot, an amazing list was formed.   The vote almost exactly matched the parish demographics as far as age, gender, tenure at St. John’s, marital and parental status, etc.   To double-check that our work had been done appropriately, we studied the list to make sure that each ministry in the parish was represented.

"Please pray for this group as they begin the important work of finding the rector that the Lord has already chosen for us!"

The 12 members of the Search Committee are as follows:

Richard Alligood

Susan Bender

Hal Broadfoot

Lenora Chandler

David Guzman

Cathryn Helms

PARISH PROFILE COMMITTEE REPORT

The report of the Profile Committee, appointed by the Vestry and chaired by Vestry member Gary Smith, is now available.  Parishioners will receive a printed copy of the report, but it is being posted here to provide a sneak peak before the printed copies are available. The report is the result of the parish survey and a series of meetings with parishioners held earlier this year.  The Vestry has named a Search Committee which, with the help of the Profile Committee report, will begin the process of searching for a new rector.  To view the Profile Committee's report:  Click Here.
