I was born and raised a Roman Catholic and was accepted into the Episcopal Church after I married my husband Billy. I have been an Episcopalian now for 30 years. We have three children, ages 25, 23, and 17, all of whom have been active in the J2A program at St. John’s. I have a special education degree and presently am manager of my husband’s law office.
I serve as a lay reader and lay eucharistic minister. I co-chaired the stewardship committee several years ago with my husband, and was co-chair of the diocesan convention committee for the 2007 convention held at St. John’s.
Marie M. Sutherland
I was baptized here at St. John’s in 1959 and have been a member ever since. Over the years, I have served as a Youth Christian Education teacher, Rite 13 leader, member of the altar guild, Greeter, ECW member, Good Shepherd member, and a participant in the Disciples of Christ in Community (DOCC) program. I am employed full time as a dental hygienist.
I am married and have two children, Tyler, who will be a junior this fall at North Carolina State University, and James, 16, who is looking forward to his upcoming pilgrimage to Ireland with the church’s J2A program.
Paige Naylor
I am the wife of an Army Colonel and the mother of two children, Wes, 12 (entering Rite 13 in the fall) and Kate, 10. I grew up as a Methodist, but after marrying an Episcopalian, I was confirmed here at St. John’s in 1993.
Although the Army has moved us all over the United States, we returned home to Fayetteville three years ago and plan to never leave. I have been involved with the children’s Sunday school, the youth as a leader of the YAC, and am a co-manager of the gift shop. I enjoy being an active part of this church family.
Walker Worth III
I have been a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church since birth, and my parents also are active in the church. Currently I am on the Investment Committee and Search Committee and previously served two terms on the Vestry. I also have sat on various other committees. While serving on the Vestry, I chaired the Finance Committee all six years.
I have two-step children, Jack and Rebecca, both of whom are active in the church’s J2A program and serve as acolytes. My wife Murtis and I have a one-year-old son, also named Walker.
Professionally I own a Nationwide Insurance agency and for enjoyment I play golf, workout, and go to the beach.
Richard Alligood
I am a lifelong member of St. John’s. In my younger years, I served as Sunday school teacher, Young Churchmen advisor, and Sunday School Superintendent. I have served on the Vestry several terms and as Senior Warden. Currently, I serve as a lay reader, chalice bearer, and a member of the eucharistic ministry.
My wife, Margaret Ann, and I have two daughters, each of whom is married. Our older daughter, Blair, is also a member of St. John’s and serves as chairman of the Vestry’s Parish Family Life Committee.
I retired as the Chief Court Counselor for the N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice and am now serving as the Program Manager for the Juvenile Assessment Center.
John Holmes
I am a lifelong member of St. John’s Episcopal Church having been baptized, confirmed, and married in the church. I also have had the privilege of seeing my children baptized and confirmed here. I am married to the former Mary Moorman, also a lifelong Episcopalian.
I have been active in church leadership for most of my adult life having served multiple terms on the Vestry as Junior Warden, Senior Warden, Stewardship Chairman, and Planned Giving Chairman. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I have over thirty years experience as Director of Human Resources in the public and private sector.
I have enjoyed my service on the Search Committee and look forward to working with our new priest.
Jean Hermann
I have been a member of St. John’s for twelve years. Currently I am a chalice bearer, lay reader, and lay eucharistic minister. I have served twice on the Vestry and on search committees. I have enjoyed working with several discernment committees and also on the Worship Committee. A few years ago I completed the Education for Ministry (EfM) course, a four-year program of theological education for lay people offered by extension from the School of Theology of the University of the South.
My husband John and I are parents of four grown children, and I am retired from 23 years of teaching at Fort Bragg’s elementary schools. Now John, who is retired from the U.S. Army, and I have time for golf and good travels!
Hal Broadfoot Jr.
I am a lifelong Episcopalian and member of St. John’s, having been born into a family with a long history of membership here. I have served the church in various capacities, including youth leader, committee member (multiple committees), Vestryman (4 terms), and Senior Warden (twice). This is my second time on a search committee.
In my life outside of the church, I am a birder, an artist, and a lawyer.
Lenora Chandler
I was confirmed at St. John’s in 1993 and married Glenn Chandler, a cradle Episcopalian, in 1994. We moved around a lot after we were married, as Glenn was on active duty with the U.S. Army. Following his retirement, we settled in Fayetteville, which is home to me having grown up here and worshipping in a Presbyterian Church. Once I attended St. John’s, it was easy to convert to the rich Episcopal tradition.
We have two children, Elizabeth 13, and Brian l1, both of whom serve as acolytes. I serve on the altar guild and Glenn is in charge of scheduling and training the acolytes. I am also a 7th grade math teacher and I feel that was God's calling for me.
David Guzman
I have been a member of St. John’s since 2000. I was attracted to St. John’s on day one by the warm welcome I got. I immediately felt as if I belonged.
My wife Carmen and I have two grown children. Our son Daniel is on active duty serving with the NC guard in Iraq. Like many of my fellow parishioners, I also have a connection with Fort Bragg as a retired First Sergeant.
My particular love is with the older youth, especially those in the J2A and YAC programs. I have accompanied them on two pilgrimages, one to Italy and one to Canada.
Both Carmen and I serve as altar guild members. We also have a passion for the farm workers ministry in Newton Grove, and I serve as an Operation Inasmuch coordinator for the church.
Denise Varela
I am a lifelong Episcopalian from Brooklyn, NY. I am married to Richard Varela and we have three grown sons. The U.S. Army brought our family to Fayetteville and we now call NC our home and St. John’s our church home. I am currently a Special Needs Teacher for children ages 3-5.
The Episcopal Church’s rich liturgy and beautiful music have always been a large part of my life. I started singing in the Girl’s Choir at age 8 and throughout my growing years I served as a choir member, lay reader, Sunday school teacher, and crucifer.
At St. John’s I continue my love of church music as a member of the senior and hand bell choirs. Children are also one of my passions and I assist our very talented choirmaster with the children’s choirs. Along with this very rewarding service, I also serve on the altar guild.
Susan Bender
I was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s and was active in Sunday School and youth activities during my growing-up years. I attended an Episcopal girl’s school for four years where again I was involved in church activities. My first husband was brought up in the Methodist church but was confirmed at St. John’s shortly after we were married. His military career took us to Oklahoma, California, and Georgia. With each move we found an Episcopal Church where we could worship and participate in activities.
After his death I moved back home to Fayetteville and St. John’s where I raised my then young children. In 1995 I married George Bender, also a lifetime member of St John’s. My retirement from the teaching profession has given me new opportunities for service, the most recent being altar guild chairman.
