Journey to Adulthood

Journey to Adulthood is a six-year program divided into three two-year components based on grade: Rite 13, J2A, and YAC. The program was developed to attract, instruct, and nurture young people at the time in their lives when they are most likely to drift away from the Church. It is based on two key concepts: 1) Manhood and Womanhood are gifts from God and 2) Adulthood must be earned. Journey to Adulthood focuses on teaching young adults the skills needed to prepare them for adulthood and positive life attitudes through the Church.

Each segment of the program has a systematic focus on all the aspects of a whole person. Self, Society, Sexuality, and Spirituality are the areas that are covered in the light of the Gospel, in order that the reality of young people’s lives can be strengthened, encouraged, healed, and empowered by the life and wisdom of Jesus Christ.

The program takes seriously the need to deal with what is real for young people, to honor their questions, to assure them that they are real people with real, valid and authentic experiences. By entering into a dialogue with young people about all of their concerns, and by offering to them the instruction of faith, as best we can, we seek to prepare them to lead a strong and productive Christian life.

We are very pleased to have Melene Hatcher leading our Journey to Adulthood program.  Melene has been a Rite 13 leader and will serve as volunteer Journey to Adulthood coordinator.  She will lead efforts to raise funds for each group as they save for their pilgrimage.  Melene will also coordinate the activities of all three groups, helping with scheduling and curriculums.

Rite 13

Rite 13 celebrates the gift of gender and provides a foundation for the remainder of the program. A two-year program, Rite 13 is currently comprised of students in the 7th and 8th grades. Other activities include movie outings, beach trips, community service, and mission work. A detailed course outline is available on our website: www.stjohnsfayetteville.com.

YAC

Young Adults in the Church enables the youth to practice their skills acquired over the previous four years in the context of the supportive congregation community. YAC is designed to encourage the high school juniors and seniors to be contributing members of our church and the community. They are also encouraged to take on active roles in the Sunday services. This year the YAC group initiated a Church wide recycling program.
