Journey to Adulthood

Journey to Adulthood focuses on teaching young adults the skills needed to prepare them for adulthood and positive life attitudes through the Church. Divided into three two-year components, Journey to Adulthood is based on two key concepts:  womanhood and manhood are gifts from God and adulthood must be earned.

Each segment of the program has a systematic focus on all the aspects of a whole person. Self, Society, Sexuality, and Spirituality are the areas that are covered in the light of the Gospel, in order that the reality of young people’s lives can be strengthened, encouraged, healed, and empowered by the life and wisdom of Jesus Christ.

The program takes the need to deal with what is real for young people seriously.  Leaders honor students' questions and assure their students that each is a person with valid and authentic experiences. By communicating with young people about their concerns, by offering them instruction in faith, St. John's seeks to prepare them to lead a strong and productive Christian life.

We are very pleased to have Melene Hatcher leading our Journey to Adulthood program.  Melene has been a Rite 13 leader and serves as volunteer Journey to Adulthood coordinator.  She leads efforts to raise funds for each group as they save for their pilgrimage and coordinates activities, curriculum, and schedules for all three groups.

YAC

Rite 13 celebrates the gift of gender and provides a foundation for the remainder of the program. A two-year program, Rite 13 is currently comprised of students in the 7th and 8th grades. Other activities include movie outings, beach trips, community service, and mission work.

J2A builds on Rite13 by training young people in six skills of adulthood: Listening, Assertion, Negotiation, Research and Information Management, Partnership and Leadership. A two-year program, J2A is currently comprised of students in the 9th and 10th grades.

Young Adults in the Church enables the youth to practice their skills acquired over the previous four years in the context of the supportive congregation community. YAC is designed to encourage the high school juniors and seniors to be contributing members of our church and the community. They are also encouraged to take on active roles in the Sunday services. This year the YAC group initiated a Church wide recycling program.

Worship with us on Pentecost, May 19! Commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Twelve Apostles and the "birthday" of the Church, we will feature a sermon by St. John's children and gather after service for cake and refreshments.
